Croydon Central looks like it is being hit hard by the Tory Councils latest plans for Education. As many residents will know Secondary education in Croydon has been in crisis for some time as the Tory Council Cabinet member has failed to improve standards. Instead we have seen crisis after crisis at Croydon schools.
Finally, after a 2 year delay, the report into the reorganisation of Croydon Secondary Schools has been 'leaked' to the Croydon Advertiser by a senior council officer deeply upset at the state of the education department and the poor political leadership.
Their plans mean they want to Shut Addington High, Selsdon High, and Haling Manor. These are key schools serving residents in Croydon Central Constituency.
The plan rests on exploiting the governments 'Building Schools for the Future' programme to build two new schools - one in North Croydon and one to cover 'the south of the borough'.
I dont think this report pays justice to the excellent work done by the head, staff and governors at Addington High who have seen results improve in recent years. They are particularly successful with local children who stay in the school for the full 5 years.
Selsdon High meanwhile has been taken over by a 'hit squad' of Tory Councillors. No clear results of these high handed tactics have so far been apparent apart from the high profile sacking of the former Head Teacher.
It does not need to be like this. The last Labour Council in Croydon opened the brand new 'learning village' at Ashburton. Ashburton is a good community school which has taken many years to improve standards.
I understand that there will be more on this from the Labour Councillor responsible for Education over at www.croydonlabour.org.uk later today.
